Myakka River State Park is one of Florida’s largest and most diverse natural areas. One of Florida’s Wild and Scenic rivers, the Myakka River flows through 57 square miles of wetlands, prairies, hammocks, and pinelands. The river and its two shallow lakes attract a myriad of wetland creatures, making birding, canoeing, fishing, and wildlife observation popular activities.

The Friends of Myakka River are delighted to have artists from around the state record the charm of the natural beauty of Myakka River and the Park.  Perhaps these images will compel others to visit this amazing statewide natural resource we have available to us all.

February 18, 2017 – 9am till about sunset (7pm)

Stamping canvases:

Wed February 15, 4 – 5pm and Fri Feb. 17, 12 – 1pm


Arrive at the park – artists have free admission to park at the day of the event. The list with artists’ names will be at the main entrance.  Participating artists can bring one extra painting for sale. Painting must be created at Myakka Park (not eligible for awards). Sign in your extra painting at the Pavilion and leave it there for display. Paint till around 1pm anywhere in the park.

1pm – 2pm – Setting up “Off Easel” for judging and selling at the Pavilion.

2pm – 3pm – Judging and Awards (Awards will be announced soon.)

3pm – “Off Easel” Selling Event and Collectors Party

7pm – Pick up unsold paintings

Entry Deadline:

January 28, 2017


Open to all plein air artists in all 2D mediums; limited to 30 artists. Artists will be juried. The results will be announced on January 31 by email and on the website.

Artwork Dimensions:

No min, no max (whatever fits on your easel)

Frame requirement:

The artwork should be framed (affordable frames are available at Renaissance school of Art)

Entry procedure:

  • Pay Fee of $30 – payable online at or by check. If you are paying by check, make it to Renaissance School of Art and mail it to 4600 Pine Harrier Dr. Sarasota, FL, 34231
  • Email two images of your recent works in jpg size approx. 1000 pixels on the largest side. Files shouldn’t be too small or too large. Email it to Name your file: FirstNameLastnameTitleMedium.jpg  If you don’t name it appropriately, the jurors will have hard time to identify the author of the work and most likely skip it so please take your time to rename your files to reduce the jurors’ stress.

Artwork Sale:

Artwork must be for sale. In the event of sale artists will receive 60% of final price. Proceeds from the event will assist with funding special projects such as preservation trails and bird walk amenities, future band concerts and visitor center upgrades provided to the public by the Friends of Myakka River.
